Amanda Solomon and Kansas City's reStart
Amanda Solomon is a volunteer at reStart, a homeless shelter in the downtown area of Kansas City, Missouri. When she contacted reStart in hopes of volunteering, I was really hoping to simply serve a meal or two every month but she was soon persuaded to begin an initiative that recognized and celebrated clients' birthdays.
"When I first said yes to this, I thought - wait, did I just agree to organizing and raising funds for a monthly party for people I don’t know?"
Yes, that's exactly what she did.
"We now throw a monthly birthday party for anyone living at the shelter and ant at the shelter is welcome to come and join the party that day. We set up a buffet of birthday treats, a “photo-booth”, kids' crafts, WII dance party, etc and we celebrate for a few hours! It is a complete joy to me and I hope it's the same for everyone at the shelter who comes. I meet a lot of amazing people and children and I couldn’t be happier donating my time and energy.
